Privacy policy

In short: EngVoc has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Most of the app works on your iPhone alone. When you use the reader, the sentences of your text are sent to our server to be translated, and we keep only what is listed below.

What stays on your iPhone

• Your settings, reading progress, saved texts (“My texts”) and the word entries the app adds for you.
• Photos and screenshots. Text is recognised on the device with Apple’s Vision framework; images are never uploaded.
• Speech. “Tap to hear” uses the voices built into iOS.

What is sent to our server

Only when you analyse a text in the reader, or open a word the dictionary does not have:

• The sentences of that text, with the dictionary information the app found for them, and the level you set. For a missing word, the word and the sentence it came from.
• An install identifier: a random number created by the app, stored in your iPhone’s keychain. It is not linked to your name, Apple Account or device ID. We use it to count the free analyses and to check the subscription.
• For subscribers, the transaction information Apple signs for your purchase (product, purchase and expiry dates, status). Apple does not share your name, email or payment details with us.

What we keep, and for how long

• Your text is not stored. Sentences are translated and the original English is discarded.
• Translation cache, 90 days. The Serbian translation and notes of each sentence are kept for 90 days under a one-way fingerprint (a hash) of the English sentence, so the same sentence is not translated twice. The cache is shared, is not linked to the install identifier, and is deleted automatically after 90 days.
• Missing words. Single words and short phrases that the dictionary lacked, with a count and the dates they were first and last seen, and the entries written for them. They are not linked to you; we use them to improve the dictionary.
• Usage counts. The number of analyses and word look-ups per install identifier (free use) or per subscription and month, to enforce the free limit and a fair-use cap.
• Subscription status: the Apple transaction identifier, the install identifier that bought it, product, expiry and status, kept so the subscription can be checked and restored. Write to us to have it deleted after the subscription has ended.

Server logs record request counts, sizes and processing errors, never the text you send.

Who processes the data

• Cloudflare hosts our server and database.
• Anthropic provides the language model that writes the translations. Sentences are sent to its API for processing only; under its commercial terms, API inputs are not used to train its models.
• Apple processes purchases and subscriptions under Apple’s own privacy policy.

We do not sell or share your data for advertising, and we do not combine it with data from other sources.

Your choices

• Everything except the reader’s translations and missing-word entries works without sending anything.
• Deleting the app removes everything stored on your iPhone except the install identifier in the keychain.
• To ask what we hold for your install identifier, or to have it deleted, write to us. The identifier is shown nowhere else, so include the approximate date you used the app.

Children

EngVoc is a general learning app and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
